ii read this novel when ii was in 9th qrade in my first semester of honors .. at first ii didnt enjoy it but after ii realized how conficted the roles of women are ii really enjoyed it. Sula &&' Nel both embody stronq women in different ways. Sula is a rebel and qoes aqainst the status quo of that time .. &&' Nel is a typical housewife who follows all the rules. The literary elements use in the book make it even more interestinq. This novel is one of my favorites &&' ii hope u enjoy

The book that we are starting to read "SULA" looks good because it was written by a famous author "Toni Morisson" who I think also receive a noble prize!! which made it seems special!!

As I go through every chapter of Sula, the story seems to get more into depth about each character.
It is interesting to read about what each character goes through.
So far I've read about Helene and how she is ashamed of having a prostitute for a mother.

Well, where do I start.
When I first started the book Sula in class i thought it was going to be confusing and boring, but after reading chapter 1919, I actually began to understand the book, and I want to read more and find out more, because the concluding paragraphas in the end of the chapter are so mind bothering ,making you want to question what the author is telling the reader about the outcome or the next sequence.
I can't wait to read more!

The quote I liked from "1920" was where Helene says that "Much handled things are always soft" regarding her mother Rochelle. She says this to her daughter, Nell, after she admires her grandmothers' soft skin. Helene basically insulted her mother and brought up her past. Rochelle was a prostitute, which explains "Much handled".

The book seems very understandable && mature-like. However Im really enjoying reading it because my mother collects Tony Morrison books & now Im finally old enough to understand her writing. I've been interested so much more ever since Ms.Levine introduced The book Sula To us. Thanks Ms.Levine

Honestly speaking, I really didnt want to read Sula because the cover alone made me repugnance towards the book. Its true what they always say- "dont judge a book by its cover". Now Im drawn to the book even though at times it could be a little bit confusing. As I read through the chapters, the longer the chapters the more intense it becomes. I really Like this book NOW!!!

So far sula has been one heck of a trip. This book deals with many of the ongoing problems today (PTSD, racsim). To see a book that deals with this is amazing! Like many others I thought this book would be boring but I was wrong. To see what happen to Plum was shocking, (Eva's PYSCHO!!!!) this book grabs you and slaps you with shocking events. The descriptions are awsome and you can feel like you are actually there or could picture it. This is one book i want to read to the end!

I remember reading this novel with Ms. Rodgers. I agree with Catherine on the cover though. I definitely did NOT want to read it after seeing that. After a while, I learned to love the book and the characters (My favourite being Shadrack). I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I did.

Sula seems to be very interesting so far and I have to admit that this book has caught my attention. Now I can't wait to see what happens at the end.

AT FIRST I DID NOT LIKE SULA. I THOUGHT IT WAS KIND OF BORING AND OLD AGE. NOW THAT IM READING MORE OF IT, I REALIZED THAT IT IS ACTUALLY A VERY GOOD BOOK. SOMETIMES IT CAN BE DISTURBING, BUT I THINK THE DISTURBING PARTS ARE THE MOST INTERESTING. TONI MORRISON IS A VERY CREATIVE AUTHOR, AND I APPRECIATE ALL OF HER FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE IN THE BOOK. IT MAKES ME THINK HARD. I FEEL LIKE MY BRAIN IS GOING TO POP. ITS OKAY THOUGH, I STILL LIKE IT. MUCH LOVE FOR SULA!!!

sula is sinister, but her evil actions ironicly bring the people off the bottom and her relatshionship with nell together.

p.s. this is my thesis can u help me miss levine

wats the homework?

Ms. Levine said...

Hugo-

How does this sound:

Sula's evil actions ironically have positive effects on the townspeople of the Bottom and ultimately on her relationship with Nel.

What will your 3 body paragraphs be covering according to this thesis statement? So then will you also be arguing that Sula is not actually evil or have ill intent?

How can you improve or add on to this thesis?

The HW is to write a complete first draft of your essay. Refer to the essay outline I handed out in class.

Have fun with this challenge!

HOW DO I INTRODUCE A QUOTE?? WHAT DO I WRITE BEFORE I WRITE THE QUOTE???

Ms. Levine said...

Stephanie, here is an example of how you can incorporate that quote into your sentences so the quote doesn't stand alone:

Sula responds in a bold way by "holding the knife in her hand, she pulled the slate toward her and pressed her left forefinger down hard on its edge” (#). She proves to the boys that she is serious about protecting Nel, and if she can do that to her finger, imagine what she can do to the boys.

Good job Stephanie!
